An inspiring birthday party, by three!

Today I have some pic's for you from a birthday I went to on the weekend. It is all the handiwork of one very talented friend, Renae, who created the most gorgeous party for the first birthday of her twins, Clementine and Iris, and 7 year old niece Winifred. She wanted to put on a big party not just to celebrate the birthday of these little ladies but also to thank family and friends for all of the help in the last year (she suddenly had three girls under 18 months!). It was such a beautiful day with a great crowd and so many decorating details to take in! Lots of work and imagination on Renae's part.
What a cake table! So many sweets to choose from.

The take home gifts. Gold for the birthday girls. The number ones were hand made as were the cutest animal jars.

I just love the prowling tigers on the table. They didn't scare any of the children from the sweets though!

Renae and her darling husband Kurt with the girls and Winnie hiding behind the cake

So much dedication to the colour theme, an orange, green, pink and yellow layer cake!

The take home gifts weren't just for the children, I had to get my hands on some as well! The simple and oh so right invite.
Some things it appears I neglected to take photos of
- A champagne bar for the adults
- Bubble blowers for the kids
- Home made chocolate and marshmallow stirrers that instantly turned hot milk into an amazing drink. So clever! These were for everyone!

A vintage wedding in Bunninyong - Part 2

And for some more pictures!
Photo board of the ceremony overseas.

Self service food table. We kept pumpkin soup warm in slow cookers which was a great hit on a cold winters night.

Mr & Mrs arrive!

Tossing the bouquet

And the lucky catcher.. I think she has a few years to wait!
Drinks table.
The beautiful Bride!
And if you are wondering about the stunning feather pieces you are seeing on the Bride and as the cake topper, they are made by the very talented Faith Valent of Feathers by Faith. Her pieces looked just incredible and she was kind enough to let me have one to wear!
Congratulations again Charlotte, it was so fantastic to have a part in planning your and creating a memory for you. All my love xx

A vintage wedding in Bunninyong - Part 1

Oh dear blog, I have been away from you for some time. One of the reason's is that I have been busy organising the most fantastic wedding event I could for my dear friend Charlotte. She is the most lovely lady who helped me with all the labour work to put together Sam's birthday. Well the event has just occurred and it was a most fantastic night. Charlotte of course looked just stunning, and their couldn't have been more smiling faces seeing the love between this gorgeous couple!
First step, a theme. Inspired by the likes of Mumford & Sons and how fetching the bride looks in vintage attire it was just common sense to go down this route. So first to get the guests there, an invite. To make this slightly trickier the couple eloped and so this invite also acted as the announcement of marriage. The event I designed was the party for family and friends to celebrate with the couple. Here's the finished product...

For the venue we choose a local historic hall which is very close to the couples hearts as it's the town hall of Bunninyong where the groom Marc is also the Captain of the local volunteer fire brigade. Some before's...

As you can see there were some pretty good bones to work with, but it does look pretty amazing after some styling. Below are some photos from the night. Special features were the lolly table, message bored in lieu of a book, reclaimed timber screens and some inventive lighting designed for a quick pack up!
The cake and sweet table. Board features a monogram designed for the couple which was also included on the invite. On the reverse of the timber is the message area.
Drinks table with a great vintage find, the punch bowl set!
Reclaimed chicken wire is a great place for attaching tags with messages written on them - and some fantastic artworks from the the children!

Mmmm cake!

The bouquet, which also had a matching corsage. I was quite chuffed with how well this turned out.
More pictures in post number two!

A backyard shed

I am very excited because my husband and I have just submitted our plans for a backyard shed. But it's far more than just a garden shed. Its going to hold some very heavy gym equipment, because a condition of us starting a family is that we both wanted to still have easy access to the gym. And so the plans begin!

Of course when this idea began my first thought was what is it going to look like? Of course the inside is all going to be very functional, gym up one end, and garden shed style at the other with compulsory workbench etc. So the exterior is where the fun could happen.

These are some of the initial pictures I found for inspiration.

Little pieces of all of these pictures have formed part of what has ultimately become the shed plan. But this picture below is the one that I fell in love with. The design is so simple, yet super stylish and something I felt would transfer quite well to our setting. As the back of our house looks across grass and straight onto this building the aesthetic is very important as it is a focal point.

And then reality hit. Which has meant a few compromises.

Firstly their was a main sewerage pipe that went diagonally through the back of our property. There was not a way to work around this, so the shed has needed to go on an angle across the backyard, being 5 metre deep at one end and 2.5 metres other. The angle isn't too severe as the shed is 10.5 metres long, and it has actually given us more room for the gym section. The odd angles should make some good areas for storage!

Secondly these wild angles have made building a deck quite difficult, as well as supremely difficult to rip up if the sewer main ever need to be repaired. We really wanted an entertainment area at the front of shed as plan for our house mean we won't be able to have one connected directly to the back of the house. Solution, see photo three. A stunning crushed gravel area to create a very English feel to our little patch of earth!

Thirdly cedar cladding, or a hardwood that wood gradually turn gorgeously grey overtime, were a bit out of the price range. We're going to use a ply cladding instead, painted grey as per the fourth photo. And to retain timber as the feature, two windows will be boxed as per the above photo (but not as deep) in hardwood.

And now with a few tweaks the plans are in, the garden is cleared and we are ready to go! I am so excited to see the area filled with something. The dark grey cladding will make the backyard much more relaxing, especially when our hot Australian sun reflects off it.

Pinterest has been a fantastic source of inspiration for this project. It is very nice to be able to gather ideas from commercial and residential use, and not just use the tired ideas that are marketed locally. I agree colour bond sheds have their place, but not at the bottom of my backyard! I will send you updates as the building progresses.

Thanks for reading. Sarah xx

My Latest Project

A great 60th birthday
Over the last few months I've been focusing on organising a kick ass thirtieth birthday party for my husband. It has finally happened last weekend and went super well (phew!). I thought I'd share the decorations I put together for this because I found putting together something for a guy, well actually two (it was combined with his best mate), very hard to find inspiration for. Especially when my husband directed that the decorations should be sparse and cost effective. Hard to get that right when you have a huge hall to fill.

If anyone knows my area, the party was at the Brown Hill Hall. It was a great venue with so much provided and Ed, the wonder man who does  everything there, was really relaxed to deal with. The hall has a huge front space, and a second smaller room out the back. The best decision we made early on was that we would use the large back room as a kids zone. We hired giant toys, bought in colouring implements and set up a Barbie station. This worked super well as the kids were occupied all night so the parents stayed longer than normal, were more relaxed, and those kids were very ready for bed when they left!

First point for decorating inspiration of course was pinterest. Here's some of what I found.

A fantastic atmosphere created in this 30th birthday spread
And a great invitation set
From what I was able to find I came up with a few key points to follow.
-Using budget friendly leaves and recyled glass to fill the space and warm it up
- Black and white colour scheme ie newspaper
- Using just one 'statement peice' to give it a bit of wow
- Soft lighting to create a mood
- Finding something personal to the guys so they has a strong ownership of it all

And here's what that came down to!

Such a big space, but during the party there was a lot of people to fill it!
Through the back doors you can see an inflatable basketball ring and the drawing table.
The adult games, cards and poker on the stage with beer pong on the table. This was the guys idea and it worked very well, keeping the older kids interested to. And since the birthday men  weren't into a dance floor, a really good substitute. The chubba chups in the background were a big hit!

The statement piece. A big 3-0, made from cardboard, masking tape and aluminium foil. Cheap and easy but very time consuming.
Hanging from the ceiling were clusters of newspaper flowers. And for the drinks we had two baths filled to the brim with ice. Of course that creates some problems because all of the drinks are hidden, so a drinks menu had to be drawn up.

All in all super happy with the end result, and had a great time. Must add many thanks to the wonderful lady who made the cake. Lyndelle you rock! It was perfect for the birthday men who are very much into their gym routines. It was modelled on three 20kg weights and was a perfect replica, the whopper took 6 hours to cook. Sorry for lack of a better photo.
